As the University of Kansas's premier student-run news network, KUJH produces high-caliber journalism but lacked a visual identity to match. The challenge was to build a professional, cohesive brand that stood out while maintaining its student-led roots.

My Role

I was tasked with modernizing the network's identity, establishing a distinct brand voice independent of the university's primary branding, and creating a scalable design system for future student generations.

  1. Create a logo and creative brief the team is aligned on.

  2. Identify every platform need across live broadcast, social, and web.

  3. Build out the full brand collaboratively, keeping the team in the loop throughout.

  4. Activate across social, web, live broadcast, in-studio graphics, and physical collateral.

Research and Discovery

  • Researched hundreds of news organizations across legacy media, digital publishing, and both local and global brands.

  • Explored how to use the University of Kansas's brand colors in a way that felt connected to the student community without being derivative.

  • Found a visual direction that felt genuinely student-first, not just student-adjacent.

  • Built out dozens of logo concepts to explore different directions and find what actually worked

  • Ran feedback sessions with the team and kept refining based on what they responded to.

  • Mapped out every deliverable: motion graphic templates in Premiere Pro, a website redesign, new social templates, and apparel.

  • Executed the full build while staying in constant communication with the team to make sure everything landed right.
